Design & Technology

Definition: Where children learn how products and systems are designed and manufactured, how to create new products and to make creative use of a variety of resources including digital technologies to improve the world around them.

At Snodland Church of England Primary School, we value the importance of the Design Technology curriculum and the skills embedded within this curriculum, which helps to prepare children for life beyond primary school. Design Technology at Snodland develops a child’s understanding and appreciate the importance of Design Technology considering the importance of cooking and nutrition, mechanisms, textiles , electronics and structures within their everyday life.

At the start of a unit of work, children are introduced to a specific design brief, which details the produce that they will be making alongside the target audience for these products.  Children at Snodland follow a specific skills progression to ensure that there is suitable coverage of these specific subject disciplines alongside embedding key skills and knowledge such as knowledge of key designers, the design cycle, technical knowledge (e.g. knowledge of the properties of different materials) practical knowledge (e.g. how to join different materials and reinforce a structure) and their understanding of the design cycle and evaluations. To help children create links between knowledge taught across the DT curriculum they are introduced to DT lenses in Year One which helps them make promote the retention of DT knowledge throughout their time at the school.
