Geography
At Snodland Church of England Primary School, we value the importance of the Geography curriculum and the skills embedded within this curriculum, which helps to prepare children for life beyond primary school. Our Geography curriculum supports the development of curiosity and wonder about the children’s local area and contrasting locations within the wider world. To help our children make connections between knowledge taught across the curriculum they are introduced to geographical lenses in Year One which helps them make promote the retention of geographical knowledge throughout their time at the school.
Geography Lenses:
Within our Geography curriculum, children are introduced to an enquiry led learning approach. Children begin their geographical understanding in the Early Years Foundation Stage through the study of the local area. This is then further built upon with KS1 within children beginning to compare their local environment to specific environments further afield including Nairobi and Rio de Janeiro. Within lower Key Stage Two, children will further cement their understanding of the local environment through a river study focusing on The River Medway and the challenges that the local city of Canterbury faces alongside studying contrasting locations including The Gold Coast and California.
Within Upper Key Stage Two, children are able to further develop their understanding of the local environment through the use of primary and secondary sources. Children will be introducing to more sophisticated fieldwork techniques to prove why the local environment is part of a temperate biome and consider the reasons for historical changes in land-use within Snodland. Children will continue to develop their understanding of contrasting locations including The Polar Regions and Hong Kong, children will further develop their understanding of the physical and human environment and the global challenges that these places may face and possible solutions to this. Within every year, children will have an enquiry questions which they will answer throughout the unit of work to help further embed the substantive and disciplinary knowledge. At Snodland CEP, we tailor our teaching to ensure that it is relevant and address topics such as Climate Change and sustainability, which prepare the children for an ever-changing society whilst embedding our school’s Christian values.
