Science

At Snodland CEP, we aim for our pupils to leave our school with an awareness of how important Science is, to develop a sense of curiosity where they ask questions about the world around them, seek answers and are equipped with the skills to begin to investigate and then analyse their data. One of our Christian values is Stewardship, and we are passionate about our children having a sound understanding of and respect for the natural world.

We deliver the National Curriculum and promote the Working Scientifically Skills through our engaging Science lessons. Our clear Science overview and progression document allows all teachers to plan for the seamless development of these skills and learning points throughout their time at Snodland that enable them to become good ‘scientists’. We do this through exciting lessons, where children set up and engage in a range of enquiries and activities and have rich opportunities to explore the school grounds as well as our fantastic local area, whilst always being encouraged to use and apply scientific terminology. Within our curriculum we ensure that children are introduced to a number of scientific, working scientifically and enquiry lenses which help them retain key knowledge and make connections between topics taught:

Snodland’s school grounds lend themselves to Science. We have a purpose-built Science Garden including an established pond, bird table, rockery, plants, chimes for sound, and mechanisms - such as pulleys. The school has a working allotment and a much-loved Forest School area which encourages children to use and appreciate the outdoors, as well as providing a wild area for wildlife to become more established. We are spoilt by our great local area which provides more opportunities to enhance our Science learning, including: Leybourne Lakes, Holborough Lakes, walks close to our school, Holly Hill and visiting the River Medway.

We are supported by our local secondary schools to help us further enrich our curriculum and support the transition of our pupils from Year Six through to Year Seven. These schools (including Malling School and Holmesdale School) have provided us with opportunities for our KS2 pupils to use their laboratories and gain their Bunsen Burner License, they have provided video clips of experiments to support us during remote learning, shared resources and equipment where needed as well as offering to help out during our Science days.

Every year, we aim to deliver an exciting Science Day based on the children’s interests or current news. This year will be super exciting – but we want this to be kept as a surprise at the moment! At the end of Science Week, we host a very popular Science Fair where each class displays the learning they have produced, for everyone to see, and children are invited to run their own stall and show off their own experiments and science learning.
