Our Phonics Program: Little Wandle Letters and Sound Revised

Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised was adopted in September 2021 and is a complete systematic synthetic phonics programme, developed for schools by schools. It is based on the original Letters and Sounds, but has been extensively revised to provide a complete teaching programme which meets all the needs of the National Curriculum.

Fun, interactive Phonics sessions are taught daily in Foundation Stage and Year 1, with revision in Year 2 as required.  In addition to these lessons, children receive three additional small group reading sessions per week that develop their skills in decoding, fluency and comprehension.

Teachers assess children continually to ensure that they are keeping up with the programme and ‘keep up’ interventions are in place to address any gaps that arise.

Here is the link to the ‘Parents’ section of the website:  https://www.littlewandlelettersandsounds.org.uk/resources/for-parents/

This will help you to support your child with saying their phonemes (sounds) and writing their graphemes (letters). It also includes useful videos which will show you how your child is taught phonics in school, enabling you to confidently support them at home.

Phonics Assessment

To ensure that no child falls behind, children are regularly assessed to identify those who need extra support and where their gaps lie.  For this we used Phonics Tracker, an App which analyses children’s phonics through quick challenges at the end of each term and provides feedback to the school.  The tool is linked closely to the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds scheme to ensure that it is consistent with what children are being taught in class.

Phonics Screening Check – Year 1

The phonics screening check is a quick check of your child’s ability to decode words using only his or her phonic knowledge. It helps us to confirm whether your child has met the expected standard for a child at the end of Year 1.  The check is a statutory requirement for all children in Year 1 and takes place each year in the summer term. Children who did not take the check in Year 1, or who did not meet the expected standard, will take the check again at the end of Year 2.

Key Stage 2

For those children who do not pass their phonics screening re-take in KS1, their phonics learning journey will continue into KS2. These children receive regular group or 1:1 phonics teaching to address their phonics gaps, alongside personalised reading sessions, both following the structures and using the resources from the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds program. Children continue to access these Phonics and Reading interventions until they achieve the Phonics Screening Standard.
