History

At Snodland Church of England Primary School, we value the importance of the History curriculum and the skills embedded within this curriculum, which helps to prepare children for life beyond primary school. Our History curriculum supports our children to understand the importance of history and gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Throughout our curriculum, children will be able to foster and encourage their own curiosity of learning about the past and how it affects them in their everyday life. To help children create links between knowledge taught across the curriculum they are introduced to Historical lenses in Year One which helps them make promote the retention of historical knowledge throughout their time at the school.

At Snodland CEP, we believe that the Early Year Foundation Stage in central for a child to begin their historical understanding, children will start to develop their understanding of chronology based on their own lives and that of their families. Children will further explore the passing of time through key cultural celebrations throughout the year. As children progress to Year One, they will further develop their understanding of chronology changes within living memory when learning about Queen Elizabeth II and then events beyond living memory with Year Two. As children progress throughout the school, they will further develop their understanding of historical time periods through making connections using these specific disciplinary concepts (see below) and through specific enquiry questions which children will answer throughout their specific unit of work.
