Art

Art inspires the imagination - children have the chance to communicate their feelings, knowledge and ideas in their own original pieces of work.

Definition: works (as pictures, poems, or songs) made through use of the imagination and creative skills by artists.

At Snodland Church of England Primary School, we believe that Art helps inspire the imagination and helps to develop children’s creativity and for their life beyond primary school. Throughout our diverse Art curriculum, which is supported by Access Art, children have the chance to communicate their feelings, knowledge, and ideas in their own original pieces of work as shared in their sketch books. Children are encouraged to be creative risk-takers within their sketchbooks taking ownership for this space. Please refer to the images below:

Within the Art curriculum, children are encouraged to evaluate a diverse range of artwork through considering a number of key questions such as:

‘how is art made?’

  • ‘what is art?’
  • ‘how is art judged?’
  • ‘what is the purpose of art?’
  • ‘how does design affect the lives of users?’
  • ‘how does design affect human environments?’

All children are encouraged to consider the world around them from different perspectives. This this enables them to reflect on their own likes and dislikes before using their insights to make decisions about the piece of work they want to create.

To help children create links between knowledge taught across the Art curriculum they are introduced to Art lenses in Year One which helps them make promote the retention of Artistic knowledge throughout their time at the school.

Art Lenses:

Throughout their time at Snodland CEP School, the Art curriculum enables children to have the opportunity to discover the world, both past and present, through studying artistic movements and notable artists within History and the present day. By exploring different artists and art styles, children will gain an insight into cultures, lives and beliefs from around the world. Teachers model specific skills using a wide range of mediums, children then have the opportunity to showcase their artistic expression within an independent task at the end of each unit.
